I read Inland Empire by Melissa Anderson
I really enjoyed this. A lot of stuff about David Lynch's work kind of gets mired down in interpretation, especially in relation to his own interest in Transcendental Meditation as a part of his artistic practice, or the sort of cryptic, anti-interpretive statements he's made about his own work when cornered. This one does a lot better by using an "actuer theory" approach to interpret Laura Dern's amazingly varied, multi-character performance in Inland Empire in the context of her own career and image over time as an actress.
This branches out to more broadly discuss a theme that really interests me about David Lynch's later work: the unpredictability and seediness of Hollywood, especially through the protagonist of an aspiring, or not-quite-established actress. There's a lot of interesting connections and meat to chew on for people who love the film here.
