I read The Hole by Hiroko Oyamada

You'd think the bulk of this novella would be devoted to the part where the protagonist gets stuck in the titular hole, but it's really not quite about that. Instead, it's kind of an eerie portrait of a remote village that either absorbs people into a life of conformity in the name of social reproduction, or makes mysterious outcasts of them. Has similar vibes to the first person storytelling of other Japanese urban legend/found footage media too.
